At Ocean's Edge Martial Arts we teach a highly effective blend of traditional Okinawan and Chinese arts. (For those that have studied either or both before, this may seem out of the norm - we promise that it works!) To learn more about our art's specific history and makeup, please check out the About Us page.
Students of all ages will learn the core tenants of Kumite (sparring or fighting), Waza (structured self defense), and kata (standardized movement patterns to practice effective hand and feet techniques).
Yet these mean nothing without Discipline, focus, and respect. These core values are integrated into every student with the first step into the dojo.
Confidence. We will help you find it for yourself.
Ability. We're a martial arts school! You'll be able to kick, punch, strike, block, balance! (As you advance, concepts of tai chi and energy flow will be emphasized as well.)
Learning. If you've never learned a martial art before, it opens the mind in amazing ways. If you have practiced before, this art will be sure to challenge you in new ways.
Lifestyle. You aren't a martial artist only when you're in the dojo. You take the mindset of self- and spatial awareness, the confidence in defense, the physical prowess, and the mental virtues with you everywhere you go.
Safety. While we sincerely hope each student that walks in the door only ever need use our teachings in the dojo, the world requires we each know how to defend ourselves. You will learn not just defensive skills, but how to fight - and how to walk away.
Fitness. A huge benefit of martial arts is increasing your own fitness level. While Ocean's Edge will never spend more time on warm-ups than material, improving our own conditioining level is important to allow us to spend more time doing gung fu. Ocean's Edge instructors strive to ensure all members have a solid understanding of how to safely take care of our bodies to allow them to perform as needed in and out of the dojo.
At Oceans Edge Martial Arts, we are literally teaching our own children (ages 5-8) this gung fu. We wouldn't do that if we didn't believe in it. We expect the best for our children, our selves, and all of our students - we strive to deliver the best.
Our primary instructor practiced a traditional Okinawan karate for 14 years before being exposed to Won Hop Loong Chuan. The first kata (Kata Ichi) was as advanced as any form he had practiced before. The art encompasses martial effectiveness with internal flow and truly challenges each student in a beneficial way.
